Back to School 2026: Personalised Gifts That Survive a Term

Every September the same two things happen. Something with a name on it comes home in week three with the name washed off, and something without a name on it does not come home at all.

The fix is not more stuff. It is fewer things, marked properly, in a way that survives a dishwasher and a school bag. Here is what is worth doing before term starts, and what to skip.

Mark the Things That Walk

Anything a child puts down in a shared space is a candidate for disappearing. Water bottles top the list, followed by lunch boxes, coats and anything sporting.

Printed sticker labels are fine for the first month and gone by half term. Engraving and UV printing are not — the mark is in or on the surface rather than stuck to it, so it survives washing, being sat on, and a term at the bottom of a bag. If you are going to mark one thing, mark the water bottle. It is the item most likely to be left on a field.

A name is enough. Resist the temptation to add a phone number where a stranger can read it.

The Teacher Gift, Bought Early

What to Skip

Anything that needs charging. Anything a child has to remember to bring home. Anything personalised with a nickname they may have grown out of by February — children change what they want to be called far faster than adults expect, and a permanent mark is permanent.

And do not personalise uniform items the school supplies. They get swapped, handed down and replaced, and the mark outlives the ownership.
